Behavioral Activation (BA) is a therapeutic process that helps people re-engage with their lives by scheduling activities that improve mood and increase positive reinforcement from the environment.

A useful mnemonic for categories of activities in Behavioral Activation is BA MACE:

  • Movement activities: Exercise, walking, yoga, or any physical movement.
  • Achievement activities: Tasks that provide a sense of accomplishment (e.g., chores, work projects, learning a skill).
  • Connection activities: Social interactions and maintaining relationships.
  • Enjoyment activities: Hobbies, leisure, and things done purely for pleasure.

Overcoming Avoidance

  • TRAP (Trigger, Response, Avoidance Pattern): Identifying the cycle where a trigger leads to an emotional response, which then results in an avoidance pattern (like staying in bed or isolating).
  • RCA (Rumination Cues Action): When rumination is identified as a particularly common avoidance behavior that worsens mood, use the cue of rumination as a signal to transition into a planned activity (Action).
