The Eight-Point Program of Passage Meditation
Eknath Easwaran developed an eight-point program of passage meditation to help individuals lead a spiritual life and contribute to the world while living in the midst of their homes, workplaces, and communities. The program is based on meditation and includes seven other allied tools for training the mind.
The eight points are:
- Meditation on a Passage: Memorizing and silently repeating inspirational passages from the world’s major spiritual traditions.
- Repetition of a Mantram: Silently repeating a holy name or spiritual formula (like Rama, Jesus, Om Mani Padme Hum) to calm the mind during the day.
- Slowing Down: Consciously living at a slower, more deliberate pace to reduce stress and improve the quality of everything you do.
- One-Pointed Attention: Giving your full concentration to whatever you are doing, rather than multitasking.
- Training the Senses: Directing your senses consciously, rather than being driven by cravings and aversions.
- Putting Others First: Putting the well-being of others ahead of your own personal preferences.
- Spiritual Fellowship (Satsang): Spending time with others who are also trying to follow a spiritual path.
- Spiritual Reading: Reading works by mystics and spiritual teachers regularly to draw inspiration.
