Patanjali Yoga Sutra 3.43

Sanskrit Sutra

कायाकाशयोः सम्बन्धसंयमाल्लघुतूलसमापत्तेश्चाकाशगमनम्॥४३॥

Swami Vivekananda's translation

By making Samyama on the relation between the Akasha and the body and becoming light as cotton-wool etc., through meditation on them, the Yogi goes through the skies.

Vyasa Bhashya (Sanskrit)

यत्र कायस्तत्राऽऽकाशं तस्यावकाशदानात्कायस्य तेन संबन्धः प्राप्तिस्तत्र कृतसंयमो जित्वा तत्संबन्धं लघुषु वा तूलादिष्वा परमाणुभ्यः समापत्तिं लब्ध्वा जितसंबन्धो लघुर्भवति। लघुत्वाच्च जले पादाभ्यां विहरति। ततस्तूर्णनाभितन्तुमात्रे विहृत्य रश्मिषु विहरति। ततो यथेष्टमाकाशगतिरस्य भवतीति ॥ ४२ ॥

Vyasa Bhashya (English Translation)

Where there is a body, there is Akasha (space), because it provides room for it. The relationship between them is pervasive. By making Samyama on this relationship and mastering it, and by acquiring the state (samapatti) of light things like cotton wool down to an atom, the yogi who has mastered this relationship becomes light. Due to lightness, he can walk on water with his feet. Then, having walked on something merely like a spider’s web, he can walk on sunbeams. Thereafter, he gains the power to move through space at will. || 42 ||
