Patanjali Yoga Sutra 1.5
Swami Vivekananda's translation
There are five classes of modifications, (some) painful and (others) not painful.
Vyasa Bhashya (Sanskrit)
Vyasa Bhashya (English Translation)
The afflicted (klista) modifications are those which are caused by afflictions (kleshas) and which become the field for the accumulation of the vehicle of karma (karmashaya). The un-afflicted (aklista) modifications are those which have for their object discriminative discernment (khyati) and which oppose the operation of the gunas. Even those which fall within the stream of afflicted modifications can be un-afflicted. And in the intervals between the afflicted modifications, the un-afflicted arise. Similarly, in the intervals between the un-afflicted modifications, the afflicted arise. Corresponding latent impressions (samskaras) are created by these modifications. And modifications are created by the latent impressions. Thus, the wheel of modifications and latent impressions revolves continuously. Such a mind, when its task is finished, either abides in a state similar to the Self (Atman) or goes into dissolution (pralaya). These five kinds of modifications are afflicted and un-afflicted. || 5 ||
