Vyasa Bhashya (English Translation)

Now, what is the means for their (modifications’) restriction? By practice (abhyasa) and detachment (vairagya), their restriction is achieved. || 12 || The river of the mind (citta-nadi) indeed flows in both directions: it flows towards good (kalyana) and it flows towards evil (papa). That which is inclined towards liberation (kaivalya) and flows in the channel of discriminative knowledge (viveka) is the one flowing towards good. That which is inclined towards worldly existence (samsara) and flows in the channel of non-discrimination (aviveka) is the one flowing towards evil. Therein, the stream of objects is blocked by detachment (vairagya). The stream of discrimination is opened up by the practice (abhyasa) of discriminative vision. Thus, the restriction of the mental modifications is dependent on both.
