The Strength of the Maruts

Verse 7.56.6

Sanskrit

यामं येष्ठाः शुभा शोभिष्ठाः श्रिया सम्मिश्ला ओजोभिरुग्राः ॥

Transliteration

yāmaṃ yeṣṭhāḥ śubhā śobhiṣṭhāḥ śriyā sammiślā ojobhir ugrāḥ ||

Word-by-Word

यामम् (travel/path/watch) | येष्ठाः (most rapid/best to go) | शुभा (with beauty/ornaments) | शोभिष्ठाः (most brilliant/richly decorated) | श्रिया (with splendor/glory/beauty) | सम्मिश्लाः (fully combined/invested) | ओजोभिः (with strengths/powers) | उग्राः (terrible/formidable/mighty).

Translation

The Maruts rapidly repair to the place [of their destination], richly decorated with ornaments, invested with beauty, formidable by their strength.


Verse 7.56.7

Sanskrit

उग्रं व ओजः स्थिरा शवांस्यधा मरुद्भिर्गणस्तुविष्मान् ॥

Translation

Fierce is your vigor, firm are your powers; thus the host of the Maruts is truly mighty.


Verse 7.56.8

Sanskrit

शुभ्रो वः शुष्मः क्रुध्मी मनांसि धुनिर्मुनिरिव शर्धस्य धृष्णोः ॥

Word-by-Word

शुभ्रः (Shining/bright/pure) | वः (your) | शुष्मः (roar/strength/blast) | क्रुध्मी (passionate/angry/impetuous) | मनांसि (minds/spirits) | धुनिः (roaring/shaking/turbulent) | मुनिः-इव (like an inspired sage/ascetic) | शर्धस्य (of the host/troop) | धृष्णोः (of the daring/bold).

Translation

Bright is your roar, impetuous are your spirits; the turbulence of your daring host is like that of an inspired sage.


Verse 7.56.10

Sanskrit

प्रिया वो नाम हुवे तुराणामा यत्तृपन्मरुतो वावशानाः ॥

Transliteration

priyā vo nāma huve turāṇām ā yat tṛpan maruto vāvaśānāḥ ||

Word-by-Word

प्रिया (beloved/dear) | वः (your) | नाम (names) | हुवे (I invoke/call upon) | तुराणाम् (of the powerful/noble ones) | (towards) | यत् (that/because) | तृपत् (satiated/enjoying) | मरुतः (O Maruts) | वावशानाः (desiring/loving).

Translation

I invoke your beloved names, O Maruts, powerful ones, so that you who are loving the offerings may be satisfied.


Verse 7.56.11

Sanskrit

स्वायुधास इष्मिणः सुनिष्का उत स्वयं तन्वः शुम्भमानाः ॥

Word-by-Word

स्वायुधासः (Well-armed/having excellent weapons) | इष्मिणः (speeding/impetuous/rapid) | सुनिष्काः (adorned with beautiful golden neck-ornaments) | उत (and/also) | स्वयम् (themselves/of their own accord) | तन्वः (bodies) | शुम्भमानाः (beautifying/adorning/radiating).

Translation

Well-armed and speeding forward, they wear beautiful golden ornaments; and they, of their own accord, render their own bodies radiant.


Verse 7.56.12

Sanskrit

शुची वो हव्या मरुतः शुचीनां शुचिं हिनोम्यध्वरं शुचिभ्यः । ऋतेन सत्यमृतसाप आयञ्छुचिजन्मानः शुचयः पावकाः ॥

Transliteration

śucī vo havyā marutaḥ śucīnāṃ śuciṃ hinomy adhvaraṃ śucibhyaḥ | ṛtena satyam ṛtasāpa āyañ chucijanmānaḥ śucayaḥ pāvakāḥ ||

Translation

Pure oblations be offered, Maruts, to you who are pure; I send this pure sacrifice to the pure ones. They who guard the truth proceed by truth to truth, being of pure birth, pure, and purifying.


Verse 7.56.25

Sanskrit

तन्न इन्द्रो वरुणो मित्रो अग्निराप ओषधीर्वनिनो जुषन्त । शर्मन्त्स्याम मरुतामुपस्थे यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥

Transliteration

tan na indro varuṇo mitro agnir āpa oṣadhīr vanino juṣanta | śarman syāma marutām upasthe yūyam pāta svastibhiḥ sadā naḥ ||

May Indra, Varuṇa, Mitra, Agni, the waters, the plants, and the trees be pleased with us; may we recline in happiness upon the lap of the Maruts; and may you ever cherish us with blessings.
