अथातो वातकलाकलीयमध्यायं व्याख्यास्यामः||१||

Translation
Now, we shall expound the chapter on the Qualities and Actions of Vata (Vatakalakaliya).

तच्छ्रुत्वा बडिशवचनमवितथमृषिगणैरनुमतमुवाच वार्योविदो राजर्षिः- एवमेतत् सर्वमनपवादं यथा भगवानाह| यानि तु खलु वायोः कुपिताकुपितस्य शरीराशरीरचरस्य शरीरेषु चरतः कर्माणि बहिःशरीरेभ्यो वा भवन्ति, तेषामवयवान्प्रत्यक्षानुमानोपदेशैः साधयित्वा नमस्कृत्य वायवे यथाशक्ति प्रवक्ष्यामः- वायुस्तन्त्रयन्त्रधरः,प्राणोदानसमानव्यानापानात्मा, प्रवर्तकश्चेष्टानामुच्चावचानां, नियन्ता प्रणेता च मनसः, सर्वेन्द्रियाणामुद्योजकः,सर्वेन्द्रियार्थानामभिवोढा, सर्वशरीरधातुव्यूहकरः, सन्धानकरः शरीरस्य, प्रवर्तको वाचः, प्रकृतिः स्पर्शशब्दयोः,श्रोत्रस्पर्शनयोर्मूलं, हर्षोत्साहयोर्योनिः, समीरणोऽग्नेः, दोषसंशोषणः , क्षेप्ता बहिर्मलानां, स्थूलाणुस्रोतसां भेत्ता, कर्तागर्भाकृतीनाम्, आयुषोऽनुवृत्तिप्रत्ययभूतो भवत्यकुपितः|
tacchrutvā baḍiśavacanamavitathamṛṣigaṇairanumatamuvāca vāryovido rājarṣiḥ- evametat sarvamanapavādaṁ yathā bhagavānāha | yāni tu khalu vāyoḥ kupitākupitasya śarīrāśarīracarasya śarīreṣu carataḥ karmāṇi bahiḥśarīrebhyo vā bhavanti, teṣāmavayavānpratyakṣānumānopadeśaiḥ sādhayitvā namaskṛtya vāyave yathāśakti pravakṣyāmaḥ- vāyustantrayantradharaḥ,prāṇodānasamānavyānāpānātmā, pravartakaśceṣṭānāmuccāvacānāṁ, niyantā praṇetā ca manasaḥ, sarvendriyāṇāmudyojakaḥ,sarvendriyārthānāmabhivoḍhā, sarvaśarīradhātuvyūhakaraḥ, sandhānakaraḥ śarīrasya, pravartako vācaḥ, prakṛtiḥ sparśaśabdayoḥ,śrotrasparśanayormūlaṁ, harṣotsāhayoryoniḥ, samīraṇo’gneḥ, doṣasaṁśoṣaṇaḥ , kṣeptā bahirmalānāṁ, sthūlāṇusrotasāṁ bhettā, kartāgarbhākṛtīnām, āyuṣo’nuvyttipratyayabhūto bhavatyakupitaḥ |
Translation
Having heard the truthful words of Badisha, concurred by the assembly of sages, the royal sage Varyovida said: “All that the venerable sage has said is correct and beyond reproach. I shall now describe the functions of Vayu, both aggravated and non-aggravated, moving within and outside bodies, as established by perception, inference, and testimony.
When Vayu is non-aggravated (normal) in the body, it:
- Supports the framework (Tantra) and machinery (Yantra) of the body.
- Exists as the five breaths: Prana, Udana, Samana, Vyana, and Apana.
- Initiates all types of movements (coarse and subtle).
- Controls and directs the mind.
- Stimulates all the senses.
- Carries the objects of all the senses (to the mind).
- Organizes all the tissues (Dhatu) and provides cohesion to the body.
- Initiates speech.
- Is the source of touch and sound, and the root of hearing and feeling.
- Is the source of joy and enthusiasm.
- Kindles the digestive fire (Agni).
- Absorbs excess Doshas and expels wastes.
- Clears the gross and subtle channels.
- Shapes the embryo.
- Is the basis for the maintenance of life.

कुपितस्तु खलु शरीरे शरीरं नानाविधैर्विकारैरुपतपति बलवर्णसुखायुषामुपघाताय, मनो व्याहर्षयति, सर्वेन्द्रियाण्युपहन्ति, विनिहन्ति गर्भान् विकृतिमापादयत्यतिकालं वा धारयति, भयशोकमोहदैन्यातिप्रलापाञ्जनयति,प्राणांश्चोपरुणद्धि|
kupitastu khalu śarīre śarīraṁ nānāvidhairvikārairupatapati balavarṇasukhāyuṣāmupaghātāya, mano vyāharṣayati, sarvendriyāṇyupahanti, vinihanti garbhān vyktimāpādayatyatikālaṁ vā dhārayati, bhayaśokamohadainyātipralāpāñjanayati,prāṇāṁścoparuṇaddhi |
Translation
When aggravated in the body, Vayu afflicts the body with various disorders, causing loss of strength, complexion, happiness, and lifespan. It agitates the mind, impairs the senses, destroys the embryo or causes deformities, and generates fear, grief, delusion, depression, and excessive talk. Finally, it obstructs the vital breaths (Prana).

prakṛtibhūtasya khalvasya loke carataḥ karmāṇīmāni bhavanti; tadyathā- dharaṇīdhāraṇaṁ, jvalanojjvālānam,ādityacandranakṣatragrahagaṇānāṁ santānagatividhānaṁ, sṛṣṭiśca meghānām, apāṁ visargaḥ, pravartanaṁ srotasāṁ, puṣpaphalānāṁcāabhinirvartanam, udbhedanaṁ cauddhidānām, ṛtūnāṁ pravibhāgaḥ, vibhāgo dhātūnāṁ, dhātumānasasthānavyvaktiḥ, bījābhisasaṁskāraḥ, śasyābhivardhanam avikledopaśoṣaṇe , avaikārikavikāraśceti |
Translation
When functioning normally in the universe, Vayu’s actions are as follows:
- Supporting the earth.
- Kindling fire.
- Regulating the movement and duration of the sun, moon, stars, and planets.
- Creating clouds and causing rain.
- Directing the flow of channels (rivers, etc.).
- Flowering and fruiting of plants, and germination of seeds.
- Determining the seasons.
- Distinguishing the elements and their quantities.
- Processing seeds and increasing crops.
- Drying or preserving moisture as needed.
- Maintaining the natural state of things.

prakupitasya khalvasya lokeṣu carataḥ karmāṇīmāni bhavanti; tadyathā- śikhariśikharāvamathanam, unmathanam anokahānām, utpīḍanaṁ sāgarāṇām, udvartanaṁ sarasāṁ, pratisaraṇam āpagānām, ākampanaṁ ca bhūmeḥ, ādhanam ambudānāṁ, nīhāranirhrādapāṁśusikatāmatsyabhekoragakṣārarudhirāśmāśanivisargaḥ, vyāpādanaṁ ca ṣaṇṇāmṛtūnām, śasyānāmasaṅghātaḥ, bhūtānāṁ copasargaḥ, bhāvānāṁ cābhāvakaraṇaṁ, caturyugāntakarāṇāṁ meghasūryānalānilānāṁ visargaḥ; sa hi bhagavān prabhavaścāvyayaśca, bhūtāṇāṁ bhāvabhāvakaraḥ, sukhāsukhayorvidhātā, mṛtyuḥ, yamaḥ, niyantā, prajāpatiḥ, aditiḥ, viśvakarmā, viśvarūpaḥ, sarvagaḥ, sarvatantrāṇāṁ vidhātā, bhāvānāmaṇuḥ, vibhuḥ, viṣṇuḥ, krāntā lokānāṁ, vāyureva bhagavān iti || 8 ||
Translation
When aggravated in the universe, Vayu acts as follows:
- Crushing mountain peaks and uprooting trees.
- Churning the oceans and overflowing lakes.
- Reversing the course of rivers and causing earthquakes.
- Blowing up clouds and causing unusual rains (of dust, sand, fish, frogs, blood, stones, etc.).
- Impairing the six seasons and destroying crops.
- Creating calamities for living beings and causing the disappearance of things.
- Initiating the dissolution of the universe (Pralaya).
Indeed, Vayu is the Lord (Bhagavan), the source and the immutable, the creator and destroyer of beings, the dispenser of happiness and misery, Death (Mrityu), the Regulator (Yama), the Progenitor (Prajapati), Infinity (Aditi), the Cosmic Architect (Vishvakarma), the Omnipresent (Sarvaga), and the All-pervasive Lord Vishnu.

वार्योविद उवाच- भिषक् पवनमतिबलमतिपरुषमतिशीघ्रकारिणमात्ययिकं चेन्नानुनिशम्येत्, सहसा प्रकुपितमतिप्रयतःकथमग्रेऽभिरक्षितुमभिधास्यति प्रागेवैनमत्ययभयात्; वायोर्यथार्था स्तुतिरपि भवत्यारोग्याय बलवर्णविवृद्धयेवर्चस्वित्वायोपचयाय ज्ञानोपपत्तये परमायुःप्रकर्षाय चेति||१०||
vāryovida uvāca- bhiṣak pavanamatibalamatīparuṣamatiśīghrakāriṇamātyayikaṁ cennānuniśamyet, sahasā prakupitamatiprayataḥ kathamagre’bhirakṣitum abhidhāsyati prāgevainam atyayabhayāt; vāyoryathārthā stutirapi bhavatyārogyāya balavarṇavivyddhayevarcasvitvāyopacayāya jñānopapattaye paramāyuḥprakarṣāya ceti || 10 ||
Translation
Varyovida said: “If a physician does not understand the Wind—which is extremely powerful, harsh, and swift-acting—how will he protect his patients when it suddenly becomes aggravated? This true praise of Vayu leads to health, strength, complexion, radiance, development, knowledge, and long life.”

मरीचिरुवाच- अग्निरेव शरीरे पित्तान्तर्गतः कुपिताकुपितः शुभाशुभानि करोति; तद्यथा- पक्तिमपक्तिं दर्शनमदर्शनंमात्रामात्रत्वमूष्मणः प्रकृतिविकृतिवर्णौ शौर्यं भयं क्रोधं हर्षं मोहं प्रसादमित्येवमादीनि चापराणि द्वन्द्वानीति||११||
mariciruvāca- agnireva śariīre pittāntargataḥ kupitākupitaḥ śubhāśubhāni karoti; tadyathā- paktimapaktiṁ darśanamadarśanaṁ mātramātratvamūṣmaṇaḥ prakṛtivikṛtivarṇau śauryaṁ bhayaṁ krodhaṁ harṣaṁ mohaṁ prasādamity evamādīni cāparāṇi dvandvānīti || 11 ||
Translation
Marichi said: “It is Agni (Fire) alone, contained within the Pitta in the body, which, when aggravated or non-aggravated, creates auspicious and inauspicious effects. These include: digestion and indigestion, vision and blindness, normal and abnormal heat, natural and unnatural complexion, courage and fear, anger and joy, delusion and clarity, and other such pairs of opposites.”

तच्छ्रुत्वा मरीचिवचः काप्य उवाच- सोम एव शरीरे श्लेष्मान्तर्गतः कुपिताकुपितः शुभाशुभानि करोति; तद्यथा- दार्ढ्यंशैथिल्यमुपचयं कार्श्यमुत्साहमालस्यं वृषतां क्लीबतां ज्ञानमज्ञानं बुद्धिं मोहमेवमादीनि चापराणि द्वन्द्वानीति||१२||
tacchrutvā marīcivacaḥ kāpya uvāca- soma eva śariīre śleṣmāntargataḥ kupitākupitaḥ śubhāśubhāni karoti; tadyathā- dārḍhyaṁ śaithilyam upacaýaṁ kārśyamutsāhamālasyaṁ vṛṣatāṁ klībatāṁ jñānamajñānaṁ buddhiṁ mohamevāmādīni cāपराणि dvandvānīti || 12 ||
Translation
Having heard Marichi’s words, Kapya said: “It is Soma (Moon/Nectar) alone, contained within the Shleshma (Kapha) in the body, which, when aggravated or non-aggravated, creates auspicious and inauspicious effects. These include: firmness and looseness, bulk and emaciation, enthusiasm and laziness, potency and impotency, knowledge and ignorance, stability and delusion, and other such pairs of opposites.”
