Bhakti Definitions in Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu

This note compiles the foundational definitions of devotion (Bhakti) and pure love of God (Prema) from Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī’s medieval masterpiece, Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu.

1. Definition of Pure Devotional Service (Verse 1.1.12)

This verse is the foundational definition of pure devotional service (uttama-bhakti) in Vaishnavism. Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī quotes this definition directly from the ancient Nārada-pañcarātra.

Sanskrit Verse

Transliteration

yathā śrī-nārada-pañcarātre —
sarvopādhi-vinirmuktaṃ tat-paratvena nirmalam |
hṛṣīkeṇa hṛṣīkeśa-sevanaṃ bhaktir ucyate || 1.1.12 ||

Word Meanings

  • yathā — thus, as;
  • śrī-nārada-pañcarātre — in the Śrī Nārada-pañcarātra;
  • sarva-upādhi-vinirmuktam — completely free from all designations or material identifications (upādhi);
  • tat-paratvena — by dedication to Him / in relation to the Supreme Lord;
  • nirmalam — pure / free from impurities (such as speculative knowledge or fruitive work);
  • hṛṣīkeṇa — with the senses;
  • hṛṣīkeśa-sevanam — service to the Lord of the senses (Hṛṣīkeśa);
  • bhaktir ucyate — is called devotion (bhaktiḥ).

English Translation

Thus, the Nārada-pañcarātra says:

“Bhakti is defined as service to the Lord using the senses. It should be done with the intention of pleasing the Lord, free from other desires, and unobstructed by other processes.”

Key Concepts

  • हृषीकेण हृषीकेश-सेवनम् (Hṛṣīkeṇa Hṛṣīkeśa-sevanam): Pure devotion is active service. It means engaging one’s physical senses (hṛṣīka) in service to the Lord of the senses (Hṛṣīkeśa), rather than using them for individual sense gratification.
  • सर्वोपाधि-विनिर्मुक्तम् (Sarvopādhi-vinirmuktam): The devotee must transcend all temporary material designations (upādhis—such as race, nationality, gender, caste, or status) and act from the constitutional position of the soul as an eternal servant of the Divine.
  • तत्परत्वेन निर्मलम् (Tat-paratvena nirmalam): The service must be completely focused on the Lord and free from other motivations, such as speculative knowledge (jñāna), fruitive actions (karma), or desire for liberation (mukti).

2. Definition of Prema (Verse 1.4.2)

This verse defines the highest stage of devotion—Prema-bhakti (pure love of God)—as exclusive, affectionate possessiveness (mamatā) toward Lord Viṣṇu. Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī quotes this definition from the Pañcarātra.

Sanskrit Verse

यथा पञ्चरात्रे—
अनन्य-ममता विष्णौ ममता प्रेम-सङ्गता ।
भक्तिर् इत्य् उच्यते भीष्म-प्रह्लादोद्धव-नारदैः ॥ १.४.२ ॥

Transliteration

yathā pañcarātre—
ananya-mamatā viṣṇau mamatā prema-saṅgatā |
bhaktir ity ucyate bhīṣma-prahlādoddhava-nāradaiḥ || 1.4.2 ||

Word Meanings

  • yathā — as, thus;
  • pañcarātre — in the Pañcarātra;
  • ananya-mamatā — exclusive possessiveness (attached to no one else);
  • viṣṇau — in/toward Lord Viṣṇu;
  • mamatā — sense of ownership / possessiveness (“He is mine”);
  • prema-saṅgatā — accompanied by or characterized by prema (intense love);
  • bhaktir ity ucyate — is called devotion (prema-bhakti);
  • bhīṣma-prahlādoddhava-nāradaiḥ — by Bhīṣma, Prahlāda, Uddhava, and Nārada.

English Translation

In the Pañcarātra it is said:

“Prema is defined by Bhīṣma, Prahlāda, Uddhava, and Nārada as that bhāva (devotional state) which has possessiveness (mamatā) related to Viṣṇu (or any other form of the Lord) and to no one else.”

Key Concepts

  • अनन्य-ममता (Ananya-mamatā): In material life, mamatā (“mine-ness”) binds us to worldly attachments. In the stage of prema, this sentiment is spiritualized and directed exclusively (ananya) toward God. It is the sweet conviction of: “He belongs to me, and I belong to Him.”
  • Great Devotees as Exemplars:
    • Bhīṣma: Exemplified this love on the battlefield, holding Krishna as his sole refuge while leaving his body.
    • Prahlāda: Maintained exclusive attachment to Lord Nrsimhadeva, ignoring all material torture and royal heritage.
    • Uddhava: Krishna’s close friend and disciple, whose love was so intense he wished to become a blade of grass in Vrindavan just to be stepped on by the Lord’s devotees.
    • Nārada: The cosmic sage who travels singing the glories of Viṣṇu, inspiring pure love of God everywhere.
