The Aditya Hridayam (आदित्यहृदयम्) is a sacred hymn dedicated to the Sun God (Surya). It is found in Sarga 107 (Chapter 107) of the Yuddha Kanda (Book of War) of Valmiki’s Ramayana.
In this episode, Sage Agastya teaches the hymn to Rama on the battlefield to help him conquer Ravana.

Commentary
रश्मिमन्तं (Rashmimantam):
- रश्मयः ज्ञानरूपाः प्रकाशरूपाश्च तद्वन्तम्।
Translation: “‘Rashmimantam’ means He who possesses rays (rashmi), which are inherently of the nature of both spiritual knowledge (Jnana-rupa) and physical light (Prakasha-rupa).”- पञ्चेन्द्रियद्वाराऽनेकज्ञानरश्मिमन्तम्। ‘रश्मिमते नमः’।
Translation: “‘Rashmimantam’ means He who possesses countless rays of consciousness/knowledge that manifest externally through the channels of the five senses. [From this, the mantra is derived:] ‘Salutations to the Lord of Rays (Om Rashmimate Namah).‘”समुद्यन्तं (Samudyantam):
- सृष्टिपालनादावुद्योगवन्तम्, उदयपर्वते समुद्गच्छन्तं वा।
Translation: “‘Samudyantam’ means He who is constantly active and effortful (Udyogavantam) in the cosmic processes of creation, preservation, and dissolution; or alternatively, He who is literally rising above the eastern horizon (Udaya-parvata).”- नित्योदितदशावन्तम्। यद्वा “यः पूर्व्याय वेधसे नवीयसे” इत्यादिरीत्या अनवरतमुदितमिव स्थितम्।
Translation: “‘Samudyantam’ means He who exists in a state of being eternally risen (nityo-dita). Or, according to the Vedic thought (‘He who is ancient yet ever new’), He remains in a state as if continuously rising without ever setting.”- लोकान् क्रियासु प्रवर्तयन्तम्। ‘समुद्यते नमः’।
Translation: “‘Samudyantam’ means He who prompts and impels all living beings of the world into their respective actions and duties. [From this, the mantra is derived:] ‘Salutations to the Rising One (Om Samudyate Namah).‘”देवासुरनमस्कृतं (Devasura-namaskrutam):
- सत्त्वप्रधाना देवाः, तमःप्रधाना असुराः, उपलक्षणया रजःप्रधानावन्तो मनुष्या अपि ग्राह्याः, तैर्नमस्कृतम्।
Translation: “‘Devasura-namaskrutam’ means He who is bowed to by the Gods, in whom the Sattva guna (purity/light) dominates, and by the Demons, in whom the Tamas guna (darkness/ignorance) dominates. By implication, human beings, in whom the Rajas guna (activity/passion) dominates, are also included; He is worshiped by all of them.”- अत्र देवासुरशब्दौ तत्तत्प्रकृतिपरौ। “दैवी सम्पद्विमोक्षाय निबन्धायासुरी मता” इति गीतोक्तेः।
Translation: “Here, the words ‘Deva’ (God) and ‘Asura’ (Demon) refer to their respective innate psychological natures (Prakriti). This matches the statement from the Bhagavad Gita (16.5): ‘The divine traits (Daivi Sampad) lead to liberation, whereas the demoniac traits (Asuri Sampad) lead to bondage.‘”विवस्वन्तम् (Vivasvantam / The Brilliant or Jeweled One):
- ‘विवस्वन्तं’ विवस्वता विशेषमणिना अन्वितेन सम्बध्यते तम्। निलयं विशेषमणिधारिणमित्यर्थः। “वघं तोये धने मणौ” इति कोशात्।
Translation: “‘Vivasvantam’ refers to Him who is connected with or possesses Vivasvan—which here denotes a unique, brilliant cosmic jewel. The text implies He is the repository or wearer of this extraordinary jewel. This interpretation is backed by the lexicon (Kosha) which states: ‘The word Vagha can mean water, wealth, or a precious jewel.‘”भास्करम् (Bhaskaram / The Creator of Light):
- ‘भास्करं’ करोतीतिकरः, भासां करः भास्करः, “तस्य भासा सर्वमिदं विभाति” इत्यादि श्रुतेः।
Translation: “‘Bhaskaram’: The word Kara means ‘one who makes.’ The one who makes or produces Bhas (splendor/light) is Bhaskara. This is supported by the Vedic scripture (Shruti): ‘By His light, all this universe is illuminated.‘”भुवनेश्वरम्(Bhuvananam Isham / Lord of the Worlds):**
- ‘भुवनानाम्’ मूलादिब्रह्मरन्ध्रान्तयोगाधारभूमीनाम् ‘ईश्वरं’ अधिष्ठातारम्। भूराद्यन्तरिक्षभुवनानां प्रकाशकतया ईश्वर एव। ‘भुवनेश्वराय नमः’।
Translation: “‘Bhuvananam Isham’: Here, ‘worlds’ (Bhuvananam) refers internally to the yogic centers of the body, spanning from the Mooladhara chakra at the base up to the Brahmarandhra at the crown. ‘Isham’ means the Supreme Presiding Ruler over them. Externally, by virtue of being the illuminator of all the physical realms like Earth and outer space, He is the Lord Himself. [From this, the mantra is derived:] ‘Salutations to the Lord of the Universe (Om Bhuvaneshvaraya Namah).‘”

16. गभस्तिभिः (Gabhastibhih / With Splendid Rays):
- ‘गभस्तिभिः’ तेजोभिः, तेजोंशसम्भवमित्युक्ततेजोऽंशैः।
Translation: “‘Gabhastibhih’ means with absolute fiery radiances (Tejobhih); it refers specifically to those powerful portions of cosmic energy and light that constitute His very form.”

स्कन्दः (Skandah):
- ‘स्कन्दः’ “स्कन्दिर् गतिशोषणायोः” इति धातोः, शत्रून् शोषयतीति स्कन्दः, षण्मुखशरीरको वा।
Translation: “He who dries up or destroys (Skandati) the miseries of transmigratory worldly existence (Samsara). Derived from the root skandir (to dry up or move); He dries up enemies, or He manifests as the six-headed deity (Shanmukha).”यमः (Yamah):
- ‘यमः’ यमयति शिक्षयतीति यमः, “यमो वैवस्वतो राजा यस्तवैष हृदि स्थितः” इति मनुस्मरणात्।
Translation: “He who restrains, regulates, and disciplines (Yamayati). He is the Inner Controller dwelling in everyone’s heart, as stated by Manu: ‘King Yama, the son of the Sun, resides right in your heart.’ Om Yamaya Namah.”सोमः (Somah):
- सूते अमृतमिति ‘सोमः’ “षू प्रेरणैश्वर्ययोः” इति धातुः, “सोमः पवते जनिता मतीनां जनिता दिवः” इत्याद्युक्तसकलकारणसोमशब्दवाच्यः।
