२. वासनाक्षय नाम द्वितीयं प्रकरणम्

अथ जीवन्मुक्तिसाधनं निरूपयामः । atha jīvanmuktisādhanaṁ nirūpayāmaḥ |
Translation
Now, we shall explain the means to attain Liberation while living (Jivanmukti).

तत्त्वज्ञानमनोनाशवासनाक्षयास्तत्साधनम् । tattvajñānamanonāśavāsanākṣayāstatsādhanam |
Translation
The means to that are: Knowledge of Reality, the dissolution of the mind, and the destruction of latent impressions (Vasanas).

पूर्वापरपरामर्शमन्तरेण सहसोत्पद्यमानस्य क्रोधादिवृत्तिविशेषस्य हेतुश्चित्तगतः संस्कारो वासना, पूर्वपूर्वाभ्यासेन चित्ते वास्यमानत्वात् । pūrvāparaparāmarśamantareṇa sahasotpadyamānasya krodhādivṛttiviśeṣasya hetuścittagataḥ saṁskāro vāsanā, pūrvapūrvābhyāsena citte vāsyamānatvāt |
Translation
Vasana is that impression in the mind which is the cause of sudden mental modifications like anger, etc., arising without any reflection on the past or future; it is so called because it “survumes” or perfumes the mind through repeated past practice.

तस्याश्च वासनायाः क्षयो नाम विवेकजन्यायां शान्तिदान्त्यादिशुद्धवासनायां दृढायां सत्यपि बाह्यनिमित्ते क्रोधाद्यनुत्पत्तिः । tasyāśca vāsanāyāḥ kṣayo nāma vivekajanyāyāṁ śāntidāntyādiśuddhavāsanāyāṁ dṛḍhāyāṁ satyapi bāhyanimitte krodhādyanutpattiḥ |
Translation
The destruction of that Vasana (Vasanakshaya) is when anger etc., does not arise even in the presence of external causes, because the pure impressions like peace and self-restraint born of discrimination have become firm.

तत्र मनोनाशाभावे वृत्तिषूत्पद्यमानासु कदाचिद् बाह्यनिमित्तेन क्रोधाद्युत्पत्तेर्नास्ति वासनाक्षयः । tatra manonāśābhāve vṛttiṣūtpadyamānāsu kadācid bāhyanimittena krodhādyutpatter nāsti vāsanākṣayaḥ |
Translation
In that case, if the mind is not dissolved, then while mental modifications are arising, anger etc. might occasionally arise due to external causes; hence there is no Vasanakshaya.

अक्षीणायां तु वासनायां तथैव वृत्युत्पादनान्नास्ति मनोनाशः । akṣīṇāyāṁ tu vāsanāyāṁ tathaiva vṛtyutpādanānnāsti manonāśaḥ |
Translation
Furthermore, so long as the Vasanas are not attenuated, the mental modifications will continue to be produced in the same way, and thus there is no dissolution of the mind.

पौरुषो यत्नः केनाप्युपायेनावश्यं सम्पादयिष्यामीत्येवंविधोत्साहरूपो निर्बन्धः । pauruṣo yatnaḥ kenāpyupāyenāvaśyaṁ sampādayiṣyāmītyevaṁvidhotsāharūpo nirbandhaḥ |
Translation
Paurusha Yatna (human effort) is the firm persistence in the form of enthusiasm, such as, “I shall surely accomplish this by whatever means necessary.”

विवेको नाम विभज्यनिश्चयः - तत्त्वज्ञानस्य श्रवणादिकं साधनम्, मनोनाशस्य योगः, वासनाक्षयस्य प्रतिकूलवासनोत्पादनमिति । viveko nāma vibhajyaniścayaḥ - tattvajñānasya śravaṇādikaṁ sādhanam, manonāśasya yogaḥ, vāsanākṣayasya pratikūlavāsanotpādanam iti |
Translation
Viveka (discrimination) is the certain determination through differentiation: following the means like hearing (Shravana) for Knowledge of Reality, Yoga for the dissolution of the mind, and generating contradictory impressions for the destruction of Vasanas.

भोगेच्छायाः स्वल्पाया अप्यभ्युपगमे “हविषा कृष्णवर्त्मेव भूय एवाभिवर्धते” (मनु० २.९४) इति न्यायेनातिप्रसङ्गस्यदुर्वारत्वाद्दूरत इत्युक्तम् । bhogecchāyāḥ svalpāyā apyabhyupagame “haviṣā kṛṣṇavartmeva bhūya evābhivardhate” (manu. 2.94) iti nyāyenātiprasaṅgasyadurvāratvāddūrata ityuktam |
Translation
If even a slight desire for enjoyment is admitted, it “grows even more like fire fed with ghee” (Manu 2.94); because this excessive consequence is unavoidable, it is said that desire should be kept far away.
