अष्टावक्र उवाच भावाभावविकारश्च स्वभावादिति निश्चयी। निर्विकारो गतक्लेशः सुखेनैवोपशाम्यति॥ 1 ॥
aṣṭāvakra uvāca bhāvābhāvavikāraśca svabhāvāditi niścayī | nirvikāro gatakleśaḥ sukhenaivopaśāmyati || 1 ||
Translation
Ashtavakra said: One who is certain that modification, existence, and non-existence are all natural, becomes free from change and suffering, and easily finds peace.
Sanskrit
ईश्वरः सर्वनिर्माता नेहान्य इति निश्चयी। अन्तर्गलितसर्वाशः शान्तः क्वापि न सज्जते॥ 2 ॥
īśvaraḥ sarvaniirmātā nehānya iti niścayī | antargalitasarvāśaḥ śāntaḥ kvāpi na sajjate || 2 ||
Translation
One who is certain that Ishvara is the creator of everything and that there is no other here, becomes peaceful, has all inner desires dissolved, and is attached to nothing.

आपदः संपदः काले दैवादेवेति निश्चयी। तृप्तः स्वस्थेन्द्रियो नित्यं न वान्छति न शोचति॥ 3 ॥
āpadaḥ saṁpadaḥ kāle daivādeveti niścayī | tṛptaḥ svasthendriyo nityaṁ na vāñchati na śocati || 3 ||
Translation
One who is certain that adversity and prosperity come in their own time through destiny, is always content, has their senses at ease, and neither desires nor grieves.

सुखदुःखे जन्ममृत्यू दैवादेवेति निश्चयी। साध्यादर्शी निरायासः कुर्वन्नपि न लिप्यते॥ 4 ॥
sukhaduḥkhe janmamṛtyū daivādeveti niścayī | sādhyādarśī nirāyāsaḥ kurvannapi na lipyate || 4 ||
Translation
One who is certain that happiness and misery, birth and death, are through destiny, sees no goal to be achieved, remains effortless, and is not tainted even while acting.

चिन्तया जायते दुःखं नान्यथेहेति निश्चयी। तया हीनः सुखी शान्तः सर्वत्र गलितस्पृहः॥ 5 ॥
cintayā jāyate duḥkhaṁ nānyatheheti niścayī | tayā hīnaḥ sukhī śāntaḥ sarvatra galitaspṛhaḥ || 5 ||
Translation
One who is certain that suffering arises from thought and nothing else here, becomes free from it, happy, peaceful, and with all desires dissolved everywhere.

नाहं देहो न मे देहो बोधोऽहमिति निश्चयी। कैवल्यं इव संप्राप्तो न स्मरत्यकृतं कृतम्॥ 6 ॥
nāhaṁ deho na me deho bodho’hamiti niścayī | kaivalyaṁ iva saṁprāpto na smaratyakṛtaṁ kṛtam || 6 ||
Translation
One who is certain that “I am not the body, nor is this body mine; I am consciousness,” attains a state like liberation and remembers neither what was done nor what was not done.

आब्रह्मस्तंबपर्यन्तं अहमेवेति निश्चयी। निर्विकल्पः शुचिः शान्तः प्राप्ताप्राप्तविनिर्वृतः॥ 7 ॥
ābrahmastambaparyantaṁ ahameveti niścayī | nirvikalpaḥ śuciḥ śāntaḥ prāptāprāptavinirvṛtaḥ || 7 ||
Translation
One who is certain that “I am indeed everything from Brahma down to a blade of grass,” becomes free from conceptualization, pure, peaceful, and indifferent to what is attained or not attained.

नाश्चर्यमिदं विश्वं न किंचिदिति निश्चयी। निर्वासनः स्फूर्तिमात्रो न किंचिदिव शाम्यति॥ 8 ॥
nāścaryamidaṁ viśvaṁ na kiñciditi niścayī | nirvāsanaḥ sphūrtimātro na kiñcidiva śāmyati || 8 ||
Translation
One who is certain that this world, though wonderful, is nothing, becomes free from desire, pure manifestation, and finds peace as if nothing existed.
