AN 5.25 - Anuggahita Sutta (Supported)

This sutta lists the five factors that support Right View (Sammādiṭṭhi / Samyagdṛṣṭi) so that it matures into the fruits of liberation of mind (cetovimutti) and liberation by wisdom (paññāvimutti).

“पञ्चहि, भिक्खवे, अङ्गेहि अनुग्गहिता सम्मादिट्ठि चेतोविमुत्तिफला च होति चेतोविमुत्तिफलानिसंसा च, पञ्ञाविमुत्तिफला च होति पञ्ञाविमुत्तिफलानिसंसा च।

कतमेहि पञ्चहि? इध, भिक्खवे, सम्मादिट्ठि सीलानुग्गहिता च होति, सुतानुग्गहिता च होति, साकच्छानुग्गहिता च होति, समथानुग्गहिता च होति, विपस्सनानुग्गहिता च होति। इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चहि अङ्गेहि अनुग्गहिता सम्मादिट्ठि चेतोविमुत्तिफला च होति चेतोविमुत्तिफलानिसंसा च, पञ्ञाविमुत्तिफला च होति पञ्ञाविमुत्तिफलानिसंसा चा”ति।

Katamehi pañcahi? Idha, bhikkhave, sammādiṭṭhi sīlānuggahitā ca hoti, sutānuggahitā ca hoti, sākacchānuggahitā ca hoti, samathānuggahitā ca hoti, vipassanānuggahitā ca hoti. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi aṅgehi anuggahitā sammādiṭṭhi cetovimuttiphalā ca hoti cetovimuttiphalānisaṃsā ca, paññāvimuttiphalā ca hoti paññāvimuttiphalānisaṃsā cā”ti.

English Translation

“Bhikkhus, when right view is supported by five factors, it has liberation of mind as its fruit and benefit, and it has liberation by wisdom as its fruit and benefit.

What are the five? Here, bhikkhus, right view is supported by virtue, supported by learning, supported by discussion, supported by tranquility, and supported by insight. Bhikkhus, when right view is supported by these five factors, it has liberation of mind as its fruit and benefit, and it has liberation by wisdom as its fruit and benefit.”

The Twofold Fruit of Liberation

  1. Liberation of Mind (Cetovimutti / Cetovimukti): Freeing of the mind from emotional defilements and passion (rāga), cultivated through samatha.
  2. Liberation by Wisdom (Paññāvimutti / Prajñāvimukti): Freeing of the mind from cognitive defilements and ignorance (avijjā / avidyā), cultivated through vipassanā.
