Shamatha and Vipasyana in Abhidhamma

In the Abhidharma literature, the cultivation of Śamatha (calm abiding) and Vipaśyanā (insight) is analyzed through the dynamics of mental factors (caittas / cetasikas).

A key aspect of this analysis is identifying the mental factors that directly hinder the development of tranquility (śamatha).

Restlessness/Excitement (Auddhatya) as an Obstacle

According to the Abhidharma-samuccaya, excitement / restlessness (auddhatya) is a secondary affliction (upakleśa) that functions as the direct counter-force or obstacle to śamatha:

Sanskrit Text

औद्धत्य कतमत्। शुभनिमित्तमनुसरतो रागांशिकश्चेतसोऽव्युपशमः। शमथपरिपन्थकर्मकम्॥

Translation

What is excitement? It is the lack of mental calm, being a part of attachment, in one who pursues an attractive object. Its function is to act as an obstacle to tranquility (śamatha).

Key Insights

  • Attachment-Driven: Auddhatya is categorized as being a part of attachment (rāga). It arises when the mind pursues and becomes agitated by attractive or pleasant objects (śubha-nimitta).
  • Obstacle to Calm: Its primary function is defined as śamatha-paripantha-karman (obstructing tranquility). For śamatha to develop, this mental turbulence must be pacified.
