उपदर्शितक्रमेण संक्लिष्टं संक्लेशसंप्रयुक्तं निष्फलव्यापारं वा ज्ञात्वा स्वचित्तं सर्वप्रवृत्तिनिगेधेन प्रभावमन्दतां विधाय निगृह्णीयादभिभवेत्। दृढं यथा पुनरपि समुदाचारधर्मकं न भवति। क्लेशादिसंग्रामे विजयाय कृतपरिकरः शुरो बोधिसत्त्वः। प्रतिपक्षेण यो यस्मिन् प्रतिपक्ष उक्तः यथा रागादावशुभादि, तेन तद्विपरीतविधानेनेत्यर्थः। सदा सर्वकालम्, यदा यदा संक्लिष्टं प्रतीयते। उग्रपरिपृच्छायां गृहिणं बोधिसत्त्वमधिकृत्योक्तम्—

तेन सुरामैरेयमद्यप्रमादस्थानात प्रतिविरतेन भवितव्यम्, अमत्तेन अनुन्मत्तेन अचपलेन अचाञ्चलेन अभ्रान्तेन अमुखरेण अनुन्नतेन उपस्थितस्मृतिनाससंप्रजन्येन। इति॥

अत्रैव च प्रव्रजितं बोधिसत्त्वमधिकृत्योक्तम्—स्मृति संप्रजन्यस्याविक्षेपः। इति॥

upadarśitakrameṇa saṃkliṣṭaṃ saṃkleśasaṃprayuktaṃ niṣphalavyāpāraṃ vā jñātvā svcittaṃ sarvapravṛttinigedhena prabhāvamandatāṃ vidhāya nigṛhṇīyādabhibhavet| dṛḍhaṃ yathā punarapi samudācāradharmakaṃ na bhavati| kleśādisaṃgrāme vijayāya kṛtaparikaraḥ śuro bodhisattvaḥ| pratipakṣeṇa yo yasmin pratipakṣa uktaḥ yathā rāgādāvaśubhādi, tena tadviparītavidhānenetyarthaḥ| sadā sarvakālam, yadā yadā saṃkliṣṭaṃ pratīyate| ugraparipṛcchāyāṃ gṛhiṇaṃ bodhisattvamadhikṛtyoktam—

tena surāmaireyamadyapramādasthānāt prativiratena bhavitavyam, amattena anunmattena acapalena acañcalena abhrāntena amukhareṇa anunnatena upasthitasmṛtināsasaṃprajanyena| iti||

atraiva ca pravrajitaṃ bodhisattvamadhिकृत्योक्तम्—smṛti saṃprajanyasyāvikṣepaḥ| iti||

Translation

Having recognized one’s own mind as defiled in the manner shown, as associated with mental afflictions, or as engaged in fruitless activity, one should restrain and overcome it by suppressing every [unwholesome] tendency, rendering its power weak. [This should be done] firmly, such that it does not become prone to manifest again. The heroic Bodhisattva is one who has girded himself for victory in the battle against afflictions and the like.

“By means of the antidote”: for whichever affliction an antidote has been stated—as for instance, the meditation on the unpleasant (aśubha) is for lust (rāga) and the like—by that means, through the practice of its opposite, is the meaning. “Always, at all times”: whenever a defiled state is perceived.

Regarding the householder Bodhisattva, it is said in the Ugraparipṛcchā: “He should abstain from the use of intoxicating liquors like surā and maireya which are the basis of heedlessness; he should be sober, not intoxicated, not fickle, not restless, not confused, not talkative, not conceited, but endowed with presence of mindfulness and clear comprehension.”

And regarding the renunciant Bodhisattva, it is said in the same work: “The non-distraction of mindfulness and clear comprehension [is essential].”
