26 Dvādaśāṅgaparīkṣā
Sanskrit
पुनर्भवाय संस्कारानविद्यानिवृतस्त्रिधा। अभिसंस्कुरुते यांस्तैर्गतिं गच्छति कर्मभिः॥१॥
punarbhavāya saṁskārānavidyānivṛtastridhā | abhisaṁskurute yāṁstairgatiṁ gacchati karmabhiḥ ||1||
Translation
Obscured by ignorance, we perform three types of compositional actions that lead to rebirth. Driven by compositional karmic actions, we wander in migratory existence.
Sanskrit
विज्ञानं संनिविशते संस्कारप्रत्ययं गतौ। संनिविष्टेऽथ विज्ञाने नामरूपं निषिच्यते॥२॥
vijñānaṁ saṁniviśate saṁskārapratyayaṁ gatau | saṁniviṣṭe’tha vijñāne nāmarūpaṁ niṣicyate ||2||
Translation
Having actions as its condition, consciousness enters migratory existence. Once consciousness has entered, name and form will come to be.

निषिक्ते नामरूपे तु षडायतनसंभवः। षडायतनमागम्य संस्पर्शः संप्रवर्तते॥३॥
niṣikte nāmarūpe tu ṣaḍāyatanasaṁbhavaḥ | ṣaḍāyatanamāgamya saṁsparśaḥ saṁpravartate ||3||
Translation
Once name and form come to be, the six sense sources arise. In dependence on the six sense sources, contact ensues.

चक्षुः प्रतीत्य रूपं च समन्वाहारमेव च। नामरूपं प्रतीत्यैवं विज्ञानं संप्रवर्तते॥४॥
cakṣuḥ pratītya rūpaṁ ca samanvāhārameva ca | nāmarūpaṁ pratītyaivaṁ vijñānaṁ saṁpravartate ||4||
Translation
It is solely generated depending on eye and form and retention. Thus, in dependence on name and form, consciousness is generated.

संनिपातस्त्रयाणां यो रूपविज्ञानचक्षुषाम्। स्पर्शः स तस्मात् स्पर्शाच्च वेदना संप्रवर्तते॥५॥
saṁnipātastrayāṇāṁ yo rūpavijñānacakṣuṣām | sparśaḥ sa tasmāt sparśācca vedanā saṁpravartate ||5||
Translation
That which is the coming together of the three—eye and form and consciousness—is contact. From contact, feeling comes to be.

वेदनाप्रत्यया तृष्णा वेदनार्थं हि तृष्यते। तृष्यमाण उपादानमुपादत्ते चतुर्विधम्॥६॥
vedanāpratyayā tṛṣṇā vedanārthaṁ hi tṛṣyate | tṛṣyamāṇa upādānamupādatte caturvidham ||6||
Translation
Craving is conditioned by feeling. Craving arises for a feeling. When we crave, we grasp—we grasp at the four aspects.

उपादाने सति भव उपादातुः प्रवर्तते। स्याद्धि यद्यनुपादानो मुच्येत न भवेद् भवः॥७॥
upādāne sati bhava upādātuḥ pravartate | syāddhi yadyanupādāno mucyeta na bhaved bhavaḥ ||7||
Translation
When there is grasping, ‘existence’ (bhava) of those who grasp comes to be. If we did not grasp, we would be freed; ‘existence’ would not arise.

पञ्च स्कन्धाः स च भवो भवाज्जातिः प्रवर्तते। जरामरणदुःखादि शोकाः सपरिदेवनाः॥८॥
pañca skandhāḥ sa ca bhavo bhavājjātiḥ pravartate | jarāmaraṇaduḥkhādi śokāḥ saparidevanāḥ ||8||
Translation
‘Existence’ is also the five aggregates. From ‘existence’ comes birth. Old age and death, misery, lamentation,

दौर्मनस्यमुपायासा जातेरेतत् प्रवर्तते। केवलस्यैवमेतस्य दुःखस्कन्धस्य संभवः॥९॥
daurmanasyamupāyāsā jāteretat pravartate | kevalasyaivametasya duḥkhaskandhasya saṁbhavaḥ ||9||
Translation
unhappiness and agitation: all these arise from birth. Thus, a mass of suffering is all that arises.

संसारमूलं संस्कारानविद्वान् संस्करोत्यतः। अविद्वान् कारकस्तस्मान्ना विद्वांस्तत्त्वदर्शनात्॥१०॥
saṁsāramūlaṁ saṁskārānavidvān saṁskarotyataḥ | avidvān kārakastasmānna vidvāṁstattvadarśanāt ||10||
Translation
The root of cyclic existence is compositional action. So the wise ones do not act. It is the unwise who act; the wise ones do not, for they see reality.

अविद्यायां निरुद्धायां संस्काराणामसंभवः। अविद्याया निरोधस्तु ज्ञानस्यैवास्य भावनात्॥११॥
avidyāyāṁ niruddhāyāṁ saṁskārāṇāmasaṁbhavaḥ | avidyāyā nirodhastu jñānasyāsyaiva bhāvanāt ||11||
Translation
With the cessation of ignorance, compositional action will not arise. The cessation of ignorance will occur when consciousness meditates on reality.

तस्य तस्य निरोधने तत्तन्नाभप्रवर्तते। दुःखस्कन्धः केवलोऽयमेवं सम्यङ् निरुध्यते॥१२॥
tasya tasya nirodhena tat tannābhipravartate | duḥkhaskandhaḥ kevalo’yamevaṁ samyag nirudhyate ||12||
Translation
Through the cessation of one factor, successive factors fail to arise. Thus this entire mass of suffering completely ceases.
