18 Ātmadharmaparīkṣā

Sanskrit

कर्मक्लेशक्षयान्मोक्षः कर्मक्लेशा विकल्पतः। ते प्रपञ्चात् प्रपञ्चस्तु शून्यतायां निरुध्यते॥५॥

karmakleśakṣayānmokṣaḥ karmakleśā vikalpataḥ | te prapañcāt prapañcastu śūnyatāyāṁ nirudhyate ||5||

Translation

Liberation comes from the cessation of karma and mental afflictions. Karma and afflictions arise from conceptual construction. These arise from mental proliferation, but proliferation is ceased in emptiness.

Sanskrit

सर्वं तथ्यं न वा तथ्यं तथ्यं चातथ्यमेव च। नैवातथ्यं नैव तथ्यमेतद् बुद्धानुशासनम्॥८॥

sarvaṁ tathyaṁ na vā tathyaṁ tathyaṁ cātathyameva ca | naivātathyaṁ naiva tathyametad buddhānuśāsanam ||8||

Translation

Everything is real, or not real, or both real and not real, or neither real nor not real: this is the Buddha’s teaching.

Sanskrit

अपरप्रत्ययं शान्तं प्रपञ्चैरप्रपञ्चितम्। निर्विकल्पमनानार्थमेतत् तत्त्वस्य लक्षणम्॥९॥

aparapratyayaṁ śāntaṁ prapañcairaprapañcitam | nirvikalpamanānārthametat tattvasya lakṣaṇam ||9||

Translation

Not dependent on another, peaceful, not proliferated by mental proliferation, free from conceptual construction, without manifoldness—this is the characteristic of reality (tattva).

Sanskrit

प्रतीत्य यद् यद् भवति न हि तावत् तदेव तत्। न चान्यदपि तत् तस्मान्नोच्छिन्नं नापि शाश्वतम्॥१०॥

pratītya yad yad bhavati na hi tāvat tadeva tat | na cānyadapi tat tasmānnocchinnaṁ nāpi śāśvatam ||10||

Translation

Whatever arises dependently is not identical to that [on which it depends], nor is it different from it. Therefore, it is neither annihilated nor permanent.

Sanskrit

अनेकार्थमनानार्थमनुच्छेदमशाश्वतम्। एतत् तल्लोकनाथानां बुद्धानां शासनामृतम्॥११॥

anekārthamanānārthamanucchedamaśāśvatam | etat tallokanāthānāṁ buddhānāṁ śāsanāmṛtam ||11||

Translation

Without oneness, without manifoldness, without annihilation, without permanence—this is the nectar of the teaching of the Buddhas, the lords of the world.

Sanskrit

सम्बुद्धानामनुत्पादे श्रावकाणां पुनः क्षये। ज्ञानं प्रत्येकबुद्धानामसंसर्गात् प्रवर्तते॥१२॥

saṁbuddhānāmanutpāde śrāvakāṇāṁ punaḥ kṣaye | jñānaṁ pratyekabuddhānāmasaṁsargāt pravartate ||12||

Translation

When perfect Buddhas do not arise, and when disciples (shravakas) have passed away, the wisdom of the Pratyekabuddhas arises without contact [with a teacher].
