Mūlāpattayaḥ (Fourteen Root Downfalls)

Sanskrit

प्रतिष्ठितनिर्वाणं जगदानन्दसुन्दरम् । नत्वा मञ्जुश्रियं वक्ष्ये मूलापत्तिश्चतुर्दश ॥ १ ॥ (pratiṣṭhitanirvāṇaṃ jagadānandasundaram | natvā mañjuśriyaṃ vakṣye mūlāpattiścaturdaśa || 1 ||)

Translation

Having bowed to Mañjuśrī, who is established in Nirvana and is the beautiful bliss of the world, I shall speak of the fourteen root downfalls.


Sanskrit

आचार्यापवमानेन सुगताज्ञाविलङ्घने । द्वेषाद् भ्रातृगुणाख्याने महामैत्रीविवर्जने ॥ २ ॥ (ācaryāpavamānena sugatājñāvilaṅghane | dveṣād bhrātṛguṇākhyāne mahāmaitrīvivarjane || 2 ||)

Translation

By insulting the teacher, by violating the commands of the Sugata (Buddha), By criticizing the qualities of vajra-brothers out of hatred, and by abandoning great loving-kindness;


Sanskrit

बोधिचत्तपरित्यागे यानत्रयनिन्दने । गुह्याख्याने जनेऽपक्षे जिनात्मस्कन्धदूषणे ॥ ३ ॥ (bodhicitta-parityāge yānatraya-nindane | guhyāख्याne jane’pakṣe jinātmaskandha-dūṣaṇe || 3 ||)

Translation

By abandoning the Bodhicitta, by disparaging the three vehicles (Yanas), By revealing secrets to unauthorized people, and by disparaging the aggregates (skandhas) which are the nature of the Jinas (Buddhas);


Sanskrit

शुद्धात्मधर्मसन्देहे इष्टमैत्रीविरागतः । धर्मे धनादयारोपे श्राद्धचित्तप्रदूषणे ॥ ४ ॥ (śuddhātmadharmasandehe iṣṭamaitrīvirāgataḥ | dharme dhanādayārope śrāddhacittapradūṣaṇe || 4 ||)

Translation

By doubting the pure nature of phenomena, by withdrawing love for the wicked (instead of wisdom), By superimposing concepts on reality, and by corrupting the mind of faith;


Sanskrit

समयासेवने प्राप्तौ प्रज्ञात्मस्त्रीप्रदूषणे । मूलापत्तिर्भवेत् तेन मन्त्रिणः समयक्षतिः ॥ ५ ॥ (samayāsevane prāptau prajñātma-strī-pradūṣane | mūlāpattir bhavet tena mantriṇaḥ samaya-kṣatiḥ || 5 ||)

Translation

By not observing the commitments (samaya) when they are required, and by disparaging women who are the nature of wisdom; These are the root downfalls by which the practitioner’s commitment is destroyed.


Sanskrit

तत्कृतौ सिद्धयो न स्युर्मारो दुःखस्य सञ्चयः । निरयगतिं च भुङ्क्तेऽसौ तीव्रा विविधवेदनाः ॥ ६ ॥ (tatkṛtau siddhayo na syur māro duḥkhasya sañcayaḥ | nirayagatiṃ ca bhuṅkte’sau tīvrā vividha-vedanāḥ || 6 ||)

Translation

If these are committed, accomplishments (siddhis) will not be achieved; there will be only the accumulation of suffering and Mara’s influence. One experiences the state of hell and intense, various agonies.


Sanskrit

गुरोर्यथाप्तितः पूजां विधाय मण्डले ततः । गृह्णीयाद् बोधिचित्तं च रत्नत्रयादिसम्बरम् ॥ ७ ॥ (guroryathāptitaḥ pūjāṃ vidhāya maṇḍale tataḥ | gṛhṇīyād bodhicittaṃ ca ratnatrayādi-sambaram || 7 ||)

Translation

Having performed worship of the Guru as appropriate in the mandala, One should take up the Bodhicitta and the vows of the Triple Gem, etc.

॥ मूलापत्तयः समाप्ताः ॥


Sthūlāpattayaḥ (Secondary Downfalls)

Sanskrit

विद्यायाः सेवने प्राप्तौ समयानामयोगतः । गणचक्रे विवादं च गुह्यधर्म्मप्रकाशानात् ॥ ८ ॥ (vidyāyāḥ sevane prāptau samayānāmayogataḥ | gaṇacakre vivādaṃ ca guhyadharma-prakāśanāt || 8 ||)

Translation

By relying on an unqualified consort, by failing to join the samaya gatherings, By quarreling in the Ganachakra, and by revealing the secret Dharma;


Sanskrit

श्रद्धासत्त्वेषु संवाराद् अनर्थदेशनाभ्रमात् । सप्तारं वसन्मध्ये श्रावकाणां महाकटे ॥ ९ ॥ (śrāddha-sattveṣu saṃvārād anartha-deśanā-bhrāmat | saptāham vasanmadhye śrāvakaṇāṃ mahāgate || 9 ||)

Translation

By withholding from those who have faith, by misleading through meaningless teachings, By staying for seven days among the Sravakas (who follow the lesser vehicle);


Sanskrit

अयोगात् पतिताश्चेन् योग्यभाजने गुह्यदेशनात् । स्थूलापत्तिर्भवेत् तेन योगिनः सम्बरक्षतिः ॥ १० ॥ (ayogāt patitāś cen yogyabhājane guhyadeśanāt | sthūlāpattir bhavet tena yoginaḥ sambarakṣatiḥ || 10 ||)

Translation

If one falls through improper practice, or by revealing secrets to the unready, These are the secondary downfalls by which the yogi’s vows are damaged.


Sanskrit

पूजयित्वा महाचार्य्यं यथाशक्त्युपचारतः । अप्रतिच्छन्नचित्तेन देशयेत् तु कृतौ व्रतौ ॥ ११ ॥ (pūjayitvā mahācāryaṃ yathāśaktyupacārataḥ | apraticchannacittena deśayet tu kṛtau vratau || 11 ||)

Translation

Having worshipped the Great Teacher with offerings according to one’s ability, One should confess with an unhidden mind the violations of the vows.

॥ स्थूलापत्तयः समाप्ताः ॥
