८ ध्यानपारमिता नाम अष्टमः परिच्छेदः।

वर्धयित्वैवमुत्साहं समाधौ स्थापयेन्मनः।
विक्षिप्तचित्तस्तु नरः क्लेशदंष्ट्रान्तरे स्थितः॥१॥vardhayitvaivamutsāhaṃ samādhau sthāpayenmanaḥ | vikṣiptacittastu naraḥ kleśadaṃṣṭrāntare sthitaḥ || 1 ||
Translation
Having thus increased one’s enthusiasm, one should fix the mind in concentration; for a person with a distracted mind stands between the fangs of the afflictions.
Sanskrit
शमथेन विपश्यनासुयुक्तः
कुरुते क्लेशविनाशमित्यवेत्य।
शमथः प्रथमं गवेषणीयः
स च लोके निरपेक्षयाभिरत्या॥४॥śamathena vipaśyanāsuyuktaḥ kurute kleśavināśamityavetya | śamathaḥ prathamaṃ gaveṣaṇīyaḥ sa ca loke nirapekṣayābhiratyā || 4 ||
Translation
Knowing that insight combined with tranquility destroys the afflictions, one should first seek tranquility. That [tranquility] is achieved through lack of concern for the world and through joy.

शून्यदेवकुले स्थित्वा वृक्षमूले गुहासु वा।
कदानपेक्षो यास्यामि पृष्ठतोऽनवलोकयन्॥२७॥śūnyadevakule sthitvā vṛkṣamūle guhāsu vā | śūnyadevakule sthitvā vṛkṣamūle guhāsu vā | kadānapekṣo yāsyāmi pṛṣṭhato’navalokayan || 27 ||
Translation
When shall I go, without looking back, to dwell in an empty temple, at the foot of a tree, or in caves, and be free from concern?

निश्चलादपि ते त्रासः कङ्कालादेवमीक्षितात्।
वेताडेनेव केनापि चाल्यमानाद्भयं न किम्॥४८॥niścalādapi te trāsaḥ kaṅkālādevamīkṣitāt | vetāḍeneva kenāpi cālyamānādbhayaṃ na kim || 48 ||
Translation
You are terrified of a skeleton even when it is motionless; why are you not afraid when it is moved by some zombie?

स्वच्छन्दचार्यनिलयः प्रतिबद्धो न कस्यचित्।
यत्संतोषसुखं भुङ्क्ते तदिन्द्रस्यापि दुर्लभम्॥८८॥svacchandacāryanilayaḥ pratibaddho na kasyacit | yatsantoṣasukhaṃ bhuṅkte tadindrasyāpi durlabham || 88 ||
Translation
Moving as one wishes, with no fixed abode, and bound to no one—the happiness of contentment that one enjoys is difficult even for Indra to obtain.

परात्मसमतामादौ भावयेदेवमादरात्।
समदुःखसुखाः सर्वे पालनीया मयात्मवत्॥९०॥parātmasamatāmādau bhāvayedevamādarāt | samaduḥkhasukhāḥ sarve pālanīyā mayātmavat || 90 ||
Translation
First, one should carefully cultivate the equality of self and others. Since all are equal in suffering and happiness, they should be guarded by me as my own self.

हस्तादिभेदेन बहुप्रकारः
कायो यथैकः परिपालनीयः।
तथा जगद्भिन्नमभिन्नदुःख-
सुखात्मकं सर्वमिदं तथैव॥९१॥hastādibhedena bahuprakāraḥ kāyo yathaikaḥ paripālanīyaḥ | tathā jagadbhinnamabhinnaduḥkhasukhātmakaṃ sarvamidaṃ tathaiva || 91 ||
Translation
Just as the body, with its various parts like hands and so forth, is to be guarded as a single [unit], so too is this entire world, which is divided but equal in its nature of suffering and happiness.

यद्यप्यन्येषु देहेषु मद्दुःखं न प्रबाधते।
तथापि तद्दुःखमेव ममात्मस्नेहदुःसहम्॥९२॥yadyapyanyeṣu deheṣu madduḥkhaṁ na prabādhate | tathāpi tadduḥkheva mamātmasnehaduḥsaham || 92 ||
Translation
Even if the suffering in other bodies does not trouble me, yet that is suffering nonetheless, and it is unbearable because of my love for myself.

तथा यद्यप्यसंवेद्यमन्यद्दुःखं मयात्मना।
तथापि तस्य तद्दुःखमात्मस्नेहेन दुःसहम्॥९३॥tathā yadyapyasaṁvedyamanyadduḥkhaṁ mayātmanā | tathāpi tasya tadduḥkhamātmasnehena duḥsaham || 93 ||
Translation
Likewise, even if the suffering of another is not felt by me personally, yet that is suffering for him, and it is unbearable because of his love for himself.

मयान्यदुःखं हन्तव्यं दुःखत्वादात्मदुःखवत्।
अनुग्राह्या मयान्येऽपि सत्त्वत्वादात्मसत्त्ववत्॥९४॥mayānyaduḥkhaṁ hantavyaṁ duḥkhatvādātmaduḥkhavat | anugrāhyā mayānye’pi sattvatvādātmasattvavat || 94 ||
Translation
Suffering in others should be removed by me because it is suffering, just like my own suffering. Others should be helped by me because they are sentient beings, just like my own self.

यदा मम परेषां च तुल्यमेव सुखं प्रियम्।
तदात्मनः को विशेषो येनात्रैव सुखोद्यमः॥९५॥yadā mama pareṣāṁ ca tulyameva sukhaṁ priyam | tadātmanaḥ ko viśeṣo yenātraiva sukhodyamaḥ || 95 ||
Translation
Since happiness is dear to me and others equally, what is so special about me that I strive for happiness only for myself?

यदा मम परेषां च भयं दुःखं च न प्रियम्।
तदात्मनः को विशेषो यत्तं रक्षामि नेतरम्॥९६॥yadā mama pareṣāṁ ca bhayaṁ duḥkhaṁ ca na priyam | tadātmanaḥ ko viśeṣo yattaṁ rakṣāmi netaram || 96 ||
Translation
Since fear and suffering are unpleasant to me and others equally, what is so special about me that I protect myself and not others?

तस्मान्मयानपेक्षेण कायस्त्यक्तो जगद्धिते।
अतोऽयं बहुदोषोऽपि धार्यते कर्मभाण्डवत्॥१८४॥tasmānmayānapekṣeṇa kāyastyakto jagaddhite | ato’yaṃ bahudoṣo’pi dhāryate karmabhāṇḍavat || 184 ||
Translation
Therefore, without concern, I have given up this body for the benefit of the world. Thus, even though it has many faults, it is maintained as an instrument for action.

तेनालं लोकचरितैः पण्डिताननुयाम्यहम्।
अप्रमादकथां स्मृत्वा स्त्यानमिद्धं निवारयन्॥१८५॥tenālaṃ lokacaritaiḥ paṇḍitānanuyāmyaham | apramādakathāṃ smṛtvā styānamiddhaṃ nivārayan || 185 ||
Translation
Enough with worldly conduct! I shall follow the wise ones. Remembering the discourse on alertness, I shall ward off sloth and torpor.

तस्मादावरणं हन्तुं समाधानं करोम्यहम्।
विमार्गाच्चित्तमाकृष्य स्वालम्बननिरन्तरम्॥१८६॥tasmādāvaraṇaṁ hantuṁ samādhānaṁ karomyaham | tasmādāvaraṇaṃ hantuṃ samādhānaṃ karomyaham | vimārgāccittamākṛṣya svālambananirantaram || 186 ||
Translation
Therefore, to destroy the hindrances, I shall practice concentration, withdrawing the mind from wrong paths and fixing it constantly on its proper object.
